Cuisinart
Cuisinart is probably the biggest competitor of Breville. Founded by a MIT trained engineer, Cuisinart has proven to put great products on the Market. Take a look at their TOB-195 modell, it is less expensive than brevilles flagship model, but good enough to keep you happy a long time. A sweet alternative if you want to save a couple of dollars. Comes with convection as well…

Oster
Most people associate hair clippers with the name Oster. Who knew that these guys are also capable of making sweet kitchen appliances? Black & Decker

Hamilton Beach
Hamilton Beach was founded in 1910 and these guys sure had a lot of time to come up with unique cooking appliances. Their creative “toastation” ovens with openings at the top are legendary and their regular-size toaster ovens come with unique features such as a rotisserie. Perfect for meat lovers!

DeLonghi
Here we have a more classical manufacturer of kitchen appliances. So it surprises a bit, that their toaster ovens got a lot of mixed reviews. There are better products on the market – stay away!

Philips
The Panasonic NB-G110P looks like a Camping TV/VCR and won’t win any design award. Still, the price is good and while it won’t replace a regular oven (get a Breville for that!), this product has a strong following. Worth a consideration!

But what to look for in a Toaster Oven?

There are several features worth looking at, before you buy. I have compiled the most important ones for you to review.

logo

Functionality

If you only want a toaster oven to carry out simple functions such as toasting or warming food then it is possible for opt for a much more basic model with less functionality and a lower price tag. This is ideal for the first time toaster oven buyer and a great way to try out the appliance without spending too much. But be warned, once you start using your toaster oven you are going to realise that a basic model just doesn’t go far enough. Spend a little more and you can have added functions such as defrosting, broiling, grilling and baking.

Even Panini press, pizza cooker and external hob options are available which make this appliance far more versatile and will significantly extend the time before you are looking to upgrade to a better model.

Convection

The convection functionality is probably the most important thing to look out for when choosing a toaster oven as it dictates the kind of cooking you can do.

Without the convection facility, your mini oven will toast and grill but it is never going to be able to provide a flow of consistent heated air that is required to bake cakes, heat casseroles or broil meat effectively. If you want a toaster oven that can take the place of a real oven then a convection facility is essential. It may cost you a little more, but without it, you have a multifunction toaster but nothing more.

Size

The size of a toaster oven is going to dictate what you can use it for and how you can store it. Obviously the smaller the toaster oven, the easier it is to store when you are not using it and the neater it is going to fit into your kitchen. But the smaller the dimensions on inside, the less capacity your oven will have to cook and the more difficult it will be to actually get in and clean it.

      • To get the right sized appliance for you, check the dimensions of the area where you would like the appliance to fit and where you would like to store it.
      • Choose a capacity which will suit your maximum requirements, whether that is a 12” pizza or a single piece of toast, and choose the biggest size you can to accommodate your needs.
      • But do make sure you have left the necessary space around the unit for air to circulate as this is essential for the safe operation of the unit.

Removable Racks

Check to ensure that the racks within the oven are removable, either by hand or by an auto eject function. If they cannot be removed, then this will significantly limit the size of the food you can cook and the number of ways you can use your oven.Though you may think that permanent racks will be not problem if all you want to do is defrost a plate of food or toast a crumpet, once you start using your miniature oven you will realise just how much potential it has.

Soon you will want to cook casseroles, bake cakes and create your own pizzas, all of which will be impossible if your racks do not adjust to give you the space you need.

Touch Screen (Digital) or Dial

When trying to decide between a touchscreen or dial control, consider your attitude to control and to cleaning. A touch screen may cost a little more, but it will provide accuracy that dial control just cannot offer. And when it comes to cleaning, you can simply wipe over a flat screen with a cloth and your job is done, whereas cleaning the nooks and crannies of a dial control may take a little longer.

Internal Light

It may seem like a very minor point, but in actual fact if your oven has not got an internal light and you can’t see when it is cooked, it can be incredibly frustrating.Imagine having to open the door every time you want to see the progress of your food and letting in all that cold air. Not only does this extend the cooking time but can be completely ruin some food. Save all the hassle at the outset and simply buy a toaster oven that has an internal light built in.

Notification Sound

Another small but essential factor is whether your toaster oven is actually going to tell you when your food is ready. Unlike a standard toaster, your food is not going to pop up when it is done. So unless you want to stand over your toaster watching it every minute, then it is a good idea to ensure that a notification sound is included on the product specifications before you buy it.

Auto Shut Off

In the same way as the notification sound, an auto shut off facility will make sure you never over cook your food and run the risk of burning. Take care when choose an auto shut off. Some are limited to just a 30 or 60 minute timings to ensure you don’t leave your oven on whereas others actually allow you to precisely dictate how long you want your food to cook.

Energy Efficiency

One of the greatest benefits of a small electric oven is its ability to cook smaller portions using less power than a conventional oven. But within the range of toaster ovens available, the amount of power they use varies considerably. A high powered toaster oven will use more energy per minute, but at the same time requires less time to cook. A lower wattage item may be more cost efficient if you are only going to cook on lower heats but will take more time.

When buying your toaster oven, check the energy efficiency rating awarded to the appliance and make sure your product meets your standards.

Cord Length

Getting the cord length right is essential for the safety of a electric toaster oven. This is a high voltage item which can be used for a considerable amount of time making it totally unsuitable for use with an extension cord. It is therefore vital to check the distance between the desired position for your toaster oven and the nearest available electrical socket. If you fall in love with one particular mini oven but can’t rearrange your kitchen to make the cord length work, then move on and choose a different model. The risks associated with electrical fires in the kitchen are simply not worth taking.

Conversely, when using any high wattage equipment it is vital that the cord is fully extended. Therefore if you choose a toaster oven with a very long cord make sure that you have the space to keep it extended during use. If the cord is too long ask the manufacturer or a qualified electrician to shorten it. It may cost you a few pounds but the benefits can be priceless.

Positioning

Most toaster ovens are designed to sit on a counter top when in use but others can be mounted underneath the counter top permanently. This is ideal if you are limited for space but always want your oven to hand, and can also be an option for integrated kitchens where appliances are embedded into the unit.

Added Extras

As toaster ovens come in such a broad range of sizes and dimensions, the pans and racks that you will be able to use within them can be very precise. Look out for ovens that come with a range of pans or racks included so you won’t have to go out buying new equipment.

Brand Reputation

Though a small toaster oven is not going to cost you as much as a standard oven, it will need to do the same job. So make sure you choose the brand of toaster oven in the same way you would a standard appliance. Choosing a product with a strong reputation not only enables you to get support and guidance from the supplier should anything go wrong, but there is much more likelihood that you will be able to source spare parts should they be needed.

Even if you have to pay a little more for a branded product, it can save you more in the long run.

Warranty

When a warranty is offered on a kitchen appliance, it is not only provides you with the confidence that your product is covered if anything goes wrong, but it also indicates the confidence the supplier has in the appliance.

All toaster ovens should come with at least one years warranty for breakdown with the opportunity to extend.

If you are required to pay for the initial warranty then factor this in to the initial price of the product and see if it is still offers value for money. If the product does not have a warranty facility, consider the cost of repair as part of your initial expense. Would this still make an attractive option?

Conclusion

When all is said and done, Toaster Ovens are a fantastic option for so many. Even if you have a standard oven, they are still ideal for days when you are on your own or simply want a quick and easy meal.

Choosing a new appliance for the kitchen is as exciting as it is nerve wracking, so use our guide to what to look for in a toaster oven and make sure you get the best one!
